A public house since the 16th century and at one time a coaching inn it has a busy front bar and a small and cosy back room, said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord. Bought in 1759 by Richard Tawney, the forerunner of Morrell’s Brewery, this was his, and hence Morrell’s first pub. The pub is now owned by Greene King. There is a large garden to the rear. The hand pumps for the cask ales are in the back bar and not visible from the larger front bar. The pub sign has featured a number of different monarchs over the years but has now been dispensed with all together.
