See more about this pub on WhatPub, CAMRA's national pub guide.

Grade II-listed pub with several rooms, and a strange layout - the main room is up six steps from the street, and then you go down steps to the other room; the bar serves both at two levels with the lower room laid out for dining and the upper room very much a bar.. Re-opened in September 2024 after Greene King spent £190,000 on an internal refit, the pub is now under the same management as a small group of pubs in London. Two real ales are provided free of tie, and every Tuesday it has a "Kill the Cask" offer of £3.50 a pint until the supply of that particular beer runs out. The 18th century pub is said to commemorate the Battle of Mahon in 1756 when the French ousted the British from the Spanish island of Menorca, and a captain in the British navy was given this pub, dating from 1710, to reward his bravery. The French invented mayonnaise to celebrate their victory and the pub now offers its own Mahon Mayo.
