A fine beer house, originally a barber's shop, which became an alehouse (Greyhound) by the end of the 17th century. It became the Angel in 1809 and was for a while owned by Joseph Early of the blanket making dynasty. It was said once to have had a cursed bar stool: anyone who sat on it either died or was taken ill (it’s no longer there, so you’re safe to sit at the bar now). An excellent front bar with low beams and a fine bay window; the pub goes back a long way behind this and has a small paved courtyard. The long-serving licensee takes his beer from Marston’s, with sometimes a guest from a variety of breweries.
